Island of Rab

THE ISLAND OF RAB

Being one of the most beautiful and authentic islands in the northern Adriatic Sea of Croatia, Rab is a place that can cater for almost every holiday wish. Crystal clear water, white rocky and sandy beaches, top-class diving, diverse nature and a romantic, old city center, are just some of the highlights this island can offer.

ABOUT RAB

The island of Rab is situated in the northern Adriatic Sea between the islands 'Krk' and 'Pag'. The island with its 9205 inhabitants measures 22 km wide and covers an area of 93.6 km2 making it one of the smaller islands on the coastline of Croatia.

Rab island holds 7 villages: Lopar, Mundanija, Supetarska Draga, Kampor, Banjol, Palit and Barbat.

Lopar is the northernmost village best known for its children-friendly 1500 m long sand beach and adjacent camping area. Also it is in Lopar the ferry from Rijeka (Krk) arrives.

Supetarska draga and Kampor are the most fertile areas with lots of vegetation, farmers and wildlife, and a great place to explore the nature. Also in beach-hunting, there are plenty of bays and peninsulas along the coastline with untouched secret oases with the most crystal clear sea water you can ever find. These parts are best discovered by boat so if you do not bring your own, we can help with arranging a taxi boat or boat rental.

The City of Rab holds its history all the way back to the Roman Empire where the city was named 'Arba'. The island hosted a settlement of the Croatian Illyric people as a defence stronghold against the Romans. Eventually it was captured, and the townwalls were built by emperor Octavian, which can still be seen today. In the renaissance the island was ruled by Venice, and much of the massive pine forests that used to cover the island, was cut down to make the foundation pillars for the city of Venice. In 1921 the island was given back to former Yugoslavia.

The island of Rab has been popular for its historical heritage and well preserved renaissance town center. Every year during the summer, the town holds a number of events to honor the cultural treasures, and if you have the possibility then do not miss the medieval festival called Rapska Fjera in end of July each year.

Bonus info: The island is known for pioneering the naturism movement after visits of King Edward VIII. But don’t worry, you will not see too much flesh on the public beaches.
